This week I have been making steady progress on my current big project, the Camellia Blanket from Nikki Trench’s ‘Learn to Crochet Granny Squares and Flower Motifs’.

As soon as I saw this blanket I knew I wanted to make it, and I knew just the person to give it to. That’s always been my draw to crochet, being able to give a handmade gift which truly has been made lovingly!

Now the only downside for me with this one was the cost of the total make as Nikki calls for Debbie Bliss yarns, and they can get a bit pricey when you need 30+ balls. So I did a bit of research and managed to substitute it for a more affordable option. So I am using Paintbox Aran in Pistachio – this is so soft for an acrylic yarn (I ordered 17 balls as they are twice as big as the Debbie Bliss alternative), Stylecraft DK in the darker green (I can’t remember the shade sorry), and then I have 3 shades of dusky pink and peach, which are also Paintbox, but Simply DK.

These kinds of projects have always been a bit daunting to me, I am not the best with repetition for a long time, and in the past have found I need to dip in and out of a big project to keep my interest going. This time, however, I am steaming ahead. I have finished all the plain squares, 72 in total (I think!), and I’m now working on the flower squares. It calls for 25 in one colour, 24 in another, and 23 in another… I’ve currently made 12 but that has taken probably a quarter of the time it took to make all the plain squares, so as you can see they are a lot more complex to make.

I keep looking at the massive bag of the pistachio Aran yarn and wonder how I will use it all, have I over-ordered? Or is it going to take a lot for joining and a border? Only time will tell!

Thank you for stopping by to see what I’ve been up to this week.
