Hello, it has been a while!
This was on my last post back in January -
"And please check my stories for the next blanket release coming in the next couple of months." - It's now August...
I'm sorry it has taken so long to get this to you, life has been busy, but I'm grateful for that.
I finished it back in June which was perfect timing for #pridemonth. But as it was my daughter's birthday in August and it was for her I thought I would wait and gift it to her.
Now I am going to caveat this post by saying I know that there are lots more pride flags than what is included in my pattern, but my daughter designed it and these were just the ones she chose to include.
She wanted each flag to include the monogram for each identity in gold and we did a rainbow flag in the middle which says Pride.
I did make a slight booboo with the Non-Binary flag as she did the research (she's only 13) and accidentally mixed it up with Genderfluid colours. So in the pictures the flag with the 'N' on it is in the colours of the Genderfluid flag. It's up to you which you want to include but I've currently just adjusted the colours for it rather than changing it to a G as it wasn't her original choice.
Having said that you could easily create that flag chart, or any others you want to add yourself (just make sure the grid is 26x26 pixels).
This blanket design is made using the corner-to-corner (C2C) crochet technique.
I have a really handy video here if you want to learn C2C for the first time or just see how my technique compares to yours.
I also have a video if you want to learn how to change colors (as there will be a fair few!).
Let’s get into the pattern
As in my last post, below are details of how to make the blanket squares, and what you’ll need. The charts can be found at the bottom of this blog.
This 9 square blanket is made using DK weight yarn and a 4mm hook. You can of course use any colours you like but to recreate this exact design you’ll need to use Stylecraft Special DK.
I have created a list here of exactly which shades I used for each square.
NB: The gold lettering is made using Rico Gold Lamé and I do an extra chain and extra hdc to the original pattern, as it's thinner, to make the squares the same size.
It has been made using the half double crochet (hdc) stitch - half treble if you’re used to UK terms.
I find it quite difficult to write corner-to-corner instructions so please, if you haven't done corner-to-corner before I urge you to watch my video linked above to get the best idea on how to do this technique. If you already know how to C2C you can find the charts linked at the bottom of this post.
If you use a different technique to me that’s fine but just be aware the size of your blanket may vary to mine which is about 2/3 length of a single bed.
Take a look at the designs:
Finishing Each Square
After you’ve finished a square do one round of single crochets in gold (making a sc, ch1, sc in each corner), followed by one round of double crochets in white (making a dc, ch2, dc in each corner). Do this to every square.
I block my squares individually at this point but you could also do it when the blanket is complete if you prefer but you may find it harder to join the squares with them unblocked.
IF you use an iron do not make contact with the lamé it will probably melt!
To Join
After all squares are blocked place the two squares you want to join, back to back (wrong sides facing). You'll then want a length of white yarn which is double the height of the square plus about 6 inches.
Start at the top and weave the yarn back and forth between the two squares using the outer loops only. When you reach the end of the first side flip it over and carry on working down the opposite side, now using the inner loops that remain. Tie off and weave in the ends when you get back to where you first began.
As you're making the 9-square blanket, you will have 3 squares in a row and 3 rows.
Border
To finish the blanket off I added a border around the whole thing. Beginning with a round of double crochets in Fiesta (again, dc, ch 1, dc in the corners). When you reach the join between two rows you may want to add a chain between a couple of stitches to avoid it puckering.
The second round was made with single crochets but this time using Magenta.
For the final round of the border go back to the Fiesta and make a round of double crochets (with a dc, ch 1, dc in the corners). Weave in all the ends.
The Charts
Click the link to my Google Drive to find all the charts and feel free to print them off. I like to cross off each row as I go I think it makes it feel like I'm making progress!
And that is it! A beautiful, unique blanket that celebrates love in all its wonderful colors.
If you can, please tag me in any pictures of your finished blankets I would love to see them!
An interesting fact... You can now find me on two Instagram grids! My amigurumi work is still under the handle @made_lovingly. But my homeware and blanket work is now @made_lovingly_blankets.
Now hold on to your hats, you may get the treat of two patterns this month as I've also finished my eldest son's blanket so I'll be back shortly (I promise!) to share that with you.
