A crocheted blanket made up of twelve Minecraft-inspired squares

Hello everyone!

Happy New Year and welcome to my first blanket pattern release, and a design you may be familiar with especially if you have kids of a certain age.

The Blocky Blanket is of course inspired by various characters, mobs, and items from the famously blocky video game world of Minecraft*!

All my blanket designs are made using the corner-to-corner (C2C) crochet technique.

I have a really handy video here if you want to learn C2C for the first time or just see how my technique compares to yours.

I also have a video if you want to learn how to change colors (as there will be a fair few!).

Let’s get into the pattern

Below are details of how to make the blanket squares, and what you’ll need. The charts can be found at the bottom of this blog.

This 12 square blanket is made using DK weight yarn and a 4mm hook. You can of course use any colours you like but to recreate this exact design you’ll need to use Stylecraft Special DK.

I have created a list here of exactly which shades I used for each square.

It has been made using the half double crochet (hdc) stitch - half treble if you’re used to UK terms.

I find it quite difficult to write corner-to-corner instructions so please, if you haven't done corner-to-corner before I urge you to watch my video linked above to get the best idea on how to do this technique. If you already know how to C2C you can find the charts linked at the bottom of this post but please read about the finishing and borders first.

If you use a different technique to me that’s fine but just be aware the size of your blanket may vary to the sizes noted next:

  • The 12 square blanket which is rectangular measures (including borders) approximately 54 x 41 inches (137.2cm x 104.1cm)

It fits nicely on my son’s single bed.

  • However, if you wanted to make a smaller square-shaped blanket you could just pick 9 of the charts which would make a square blanket that would measure (including borders) approximately 41 x 41 inches (104.1cm x 104.1cm)

Check out the designs of each square below

Finishing Each Square

After you’ve finished a square do one round of single crochets in black (making a sc, ch1, sc in each corner), followed by one round of double crochets (making a dc, ch2, dc in each corner). Do this to every square.

I block my squares individually at this point but you could also do it when the blanket is complete if you prefer but you may find it harder to join the squares with them unblocked.

Click this link if you want to see how I block the squares.

To Join

After all squares are blocked place the two squares you want to join, back to back (wrong sides facing). You'll then want a length of black yarn which is double the height of the square plus about 6 inches.

Start at the top and weave the yarn back and forth between the two squares using the outer loops only. When you reach the end of the first side flip it over and carry on working down the opposite side, now using the inner loops that remain. Tie off and weave in the ends when you get back to where you first began.

If you're making the 12-square blanket you will want 3 squares on a row and a total of 4 rows. I tend to make my rows across first and then join each row together but you can do it the other way round too if you prefer.

If you're making the 9-square blanket, you will have 3 squares in a row and 3 rows.

Border

To finish the blanket off I added a border around the whole thing. Beginning with a round of single crochets in black (again, sc, ch 1, sc in the corners). When you reach the join between two rows you may want to add a chain between a couple of stitches to avoid it puckering.

The second round was made with single crochets again but this time using Matador red.

For the final round of the border go back to the black and make a round of double crochets (with a dc, ch 1, dc in the corners).

Weave in all ends. If you want to do a final blocking you may if you choose, I didn't feel I needed to (plus it was only going to be placed on my little boy's bed so I didn't think it would look pristine for long!)

The Charts

I have a link here to my Google Drive that has all the charts so feel free to print them off. I like to cross off each row as I go I think it makes it feel like I'm making progress :D

And there you have it! This is a brightly colored and fun project that will be well received among any keen gamers of Minecraft.

If you can, please tag me in any pictures of your finished blankets I would love to see them! You can find me on Instagram under the handle @made_lovingly

And please check my stories for the next blanket release coming in the next couple of months.

Although some charts closely resemble official Minecraft characters and items, the following charts were inspired by the original images but have been designed by me: 'Tastes Like Grass', 'Redstone Rocks', and 'Diggin' for Diamonds'.
