Hello! And welcome to the first post on the Made Lovingly blog!
A couple of months ago I bought a ball of parcel string from the shop and just had the urge to crochet with it. I’m not sure why, especially when I have an abundance of yarn in my stash, but something just called to me so I went with it.
I knew it wouldn’t be much fun, although it could have been rustic, to crochet with just the string so I had a think and decided to pair it with this beautiful rainbow variegated yarn from my local Poundland.
I’ve had this plain, black, plastic Ikea plant on my desk for a while now, and as much as I love it, it definitely needed brightening up. So that is where the design was born.
It was such a quick make, approximately 3 hours one evening is all it took – I like it when you can finish a project in one evening!
I thought I would add a reverse single crochet along the bottom to add some texture and it’s also helped it to stand up.
The yarn and string combination have worked really well for this design, the string would not have looked as pretty on its own, and the yarn wouldn’t perhaps be strong enough to hold the shape I was after.
I hope you like a spike stitch, as you can see this creates the main aesthetic.
You will need: 6mm hook/ a ball of parcel string (twine)/ a 50g ball of rainbow DK yarn – work them together as though one strand.
Chain 1 (Ch1) does not count as a stitch
Ch3 does count as a stitch
Rnd 1- Magic Ring (MR), single crochet(sc) 6 (6)
Rnd 2- 2sc (into the same stitch) x6 (12)
Rnd 3- 2sc, sc1 x6 (18)
Rnd 4- 2sc, sc2 x6 (24)
Rnd 5- 2sc, sc3 x6 (30)
Rnd 6- In the back loops only (BLO), sc around (30)
Rnd 7- 2sc, sc4 x6 (36)
Rnd 8- Slip stitch (slst) into next st, ch3 (this is the first double crochet), dc into the same st, skip a stitch (skst), *2dc into the next st, skst* repeat from *to* around and slst into the 3rd ch on the first dc.
Rnd 9- ch1, sc into the same st and sc around (36), slst into the first st.
For the next round you will start the spike stitches, if you’re not sure how to do them here is a guide – yarn over hook, go into the missed stitch from round 7, yarn over and pull through and up to the height of the current round, yarn over pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through final loops.
Rnd 10- ch1 Spike stitch (spst), ch1, spst in the next missed st, repeat around and slst into ch.
Rnd 11- Repeat round 8, working the stitches into the chain space of round 10, slst into the 3rd ch of the first dc.
Rnd 12- ch1, repeat round 9.
Rnd 13- ch1 and repeat round 10.
Rnd 14- Repeat round 11.
Rnd 15-16- Repeat round 9 and 10 once more.
Rnd 17- ch1, sc into the same st, sc around (36). Fasten off and sew in ends.
Attach string and yarn strand to the first front loop left from round 6, reverse sc in each of the remaining loops (to reverse sc you basically do a single crochet but you are working in stitches to the right and working clockwise), slst to close the round. Fasten off and sew in the ends.
And there you have it The Rainbow String Planter is complete!
