THE CHEEKY PASTEL PLANTERS

Hi! If you saw my last post you will already know I love an artificial Ikea plant, and after pimping up my last pot, I couldn’t very well leave this trio (also from the Fejka range) could I?!

As you will see in the pictures, they come as plain white plastic, and while that is clean and crisp, it just isn’t that exciting – or cute!

I chose cotton for this project as I wanted to see the smooth definition of the stitches, which can get a bit fuzzy with acrylic yarn.

I tried lots of different colour combinations, but I felt with spring, the pastels were definitely the way to go. I have some Paintbox cottons so I went with a pale blue and yellow. I didn’t have a pastel purple Paintbox in my stash, so I substituted with my MillaMia (could be Frosted Lilac but don’t hold me to that!). I did have to change the stitch count for the purple as it’s a bit thinner than standard DK, but I will just put the pattern out for the Paintbox cottons as I’m sure there is a pastel purple available.

I have always loved the idea of Kawaii, which is the Japanese phrase for ‘the quality of being cute’. Kawaii faces are even better and I knew these would be a great addition to these cheeky planters!

For the faces I just used some Paintbox black DK cotton but you could equally use embroidery floss/thread, which ever you feel works for you. For the cheeks, I often like to use a bit of blusher, applied with a small brush, but I will also add some instructions for you to crochet them too if you don’t have any blusher, and you can just use some pale pink DK for this.

Whether you want a stylish pop of colour, or display their cheeky chops, you can choose.

So here is the free version of the pattern, but if you want a written up, PDF version, which you can print off and keep, you can find this in my Etsy store.

So for this you will need a 3.5mm hook, stitch marker, scissors, and a tapestry needle. DK cotton (I used Paintbox) in a pastel blue, yellow and purple, as well as black for the faces and pink for the cheeks (or blusher and a small brush to apply).

Round 1- MR, sc6 (6)

Round 2- 2sc, x6 (12)

Round 3- 2sc, sc1 x6 (18)

Round 4- 2sc, sc2 x6 (24)

Round 5- 2sc, sc3 x6 (30)

Round 6- BLO (back loops only), sc around (30)

Round 7- 2sc, sc4 x6 (36), place a stitch marker,

Round 8-18- sc around (36)

Round 19- slst around (36), fasten off and sew in the ends.

Embroider the faces onto the cover, and add blusher for the cheeks, or follow the instructions, below for crocheted ones.

Using pale pink DK (cotton is preferable), and a 3mm hook, sc4 into a magic ring, slst into the furthest stitch from the hook. Pull the tail to close the hole and fasten off, leaving an end to sew them on – make 2.

I hope you enjoy making these cheeky little guys to cover you Fejka trio.
