Hi! Welcome, or even, welcome back!

If you loved Buzby Bee last week then you must try out Crabby Crab!

They are both made with the same base body, like I was talking about in my last post, but with claws and legs to make the crab, instead of the wings and antennas for the bee.

He was inspired by this coral yarn that has been emotionally staring at me for years because it wants to be used, but I never seem to have the right project to use it with. So I gave in, and it really is a great colour for a crab!

It is acrylic, instead of cotton like the bee, but you could easily use any DK yarn, I just needed to use up some of this coral (like I say it was giving me puppy dog eyes!)

I will post the pattern below, but you can also purchase a written up PDF version to print off and keep, from my Etsy shop.

(Please read the statement at the bottom of the page before using this pattern, and note that it has not been tested to safety standards and is therefore not recommended for children)

For this make you will need the DK yarn of your choice in a coral colour, some black for the mouth (I use black Paintbox cotton)/ a 3.5mm hook/ tapestry needle/ stitch marker/ toy stuffing and 10mm safety eyes

Ch- chain/ sc- single crochet (this is dc in the UK)/ st- stitch/ inc- increase – 2 stitches in the same stitch/ dec- reducing 2 sts into one (use the invisible method if possible see YouTube if you’re not sure)/ BLO back loops only.

Body

Round 1- Ch13, working round both sides of the ch, start by sc 2 into the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next 10 ch, 4 sc into end ch, sc in next 10 ch, 2sc in the last ch (28), place stitch marker.

Round 2- Sc 4, inc, sc 4, inc, sc 8, inc, sc 4, inc, sc4 (32)

Round 3- Sc 4, inc, sc 4, inc, sc 12, inc, sc 4, inc, sc 4 (36)

Round 4- In BLO, sc around (36)

Round 5-16- Sc around (36)

At the end of round 16, add 10mm safety eyes between round 12 and 13, 6 sts apart. Embroider the smile at this stage then stuff, and top up the stuffing as you go.

Round 17- (sc 4, dec) x6 (30)

Round 18- (sc 3, dec) x6 (24)

Round 19- (sc 2, dec) x6 (18)

Round 20- (sc 1, dec) x6 (12)

Fasten off leaving a tail, and taking a tapestry needle, pass the tail from one side of the opening to the other in a zigzag along and pull together gently to close. Secure and sew in ends.

Claws – make 4

Row 1- Leaving a 6 inch starting tail on 2 of the 4 claws (pairing one that has a long tail with one that doesn’t during assembly), ch 4, sc into the 2nd ch from the hook, sc 2 more (3), ch1 and turn

Row 2-6- Sc 3, ch1 and turn (3)

Row 7- 3sc, sc1, 3sc, ch1 and turn (7)

Row 8-9- sc3, ch1 and turn (3)

Row 10- Dec, sc 1, ch1 and turn (2)

Row 11- Dec, ch1 and turn (1)

Row 12- Sc1, fasten off and attach yarn into the 5th st on row 4, and repeat rows 8-12 for the other side.

Fasten off and sew in all ends at the top of the claw.

Join the yarn and sc around, working through both pieces, stop ¾ of the way around, add a small bit of stuffing, and finish crocheting; slst into the first sc. Sew in the end. Use the long tail to attach the claw to the body.

I do hope you enjoy making him! He is partial to living by the sea but I’m sure he won’t mind a different view for a change – and he promises he won’t nip!
