Hi and welcome, or even welcome back!

Getting back to my love of amigurumi, and coincidentally in line with World Bee Day this week, I decided to create this cute little fellow by the name of Buzby (look out for his pattern at the end of the post).

I’ve being trying to develop a stock pattern for creatures so that I can just adjust the colours and things like limbs and wings. I like round figures but I also wanted it to be easy to hold and be able to stand unsupported so I used a square oblong shape and added the row of back loops, which creates a base to help it sit.

I chose to make him in Paintbox cottons, they tend to be my go to for cotton yarns, and I’m slowly building up my collection (don’t tell my husband 😄). I chose Buttercup Yellow, although the pastel yellow might work well too and obviously black.

The cotton gives a more defined texture and you have to be careful not to split it, but I love the overall look.

I used Champagne White for the wings and black again for the antenna.

His eyes are 10mm safety eyes, and I had a play around with different sizes, but I think the big eyes add to his character. Add a little smile to finish and he’s complete.

I’ve since added him to my baby daughter’s play gym and she loves him!

If you want a written up PDF version of Buzby’s pattern to print off and keep you can find it now in my Etsy store.

(Please read the statement at the bottom of the page before using this pattern, and note that it has not been tested to safety standards and is therefore not recommended for children)

So for Buzby, you need a 3.5mm hook, and all the colours I have mentioned above, as well as 10mm eyes, toy stuffing, a stitch marker, tapestry needle and scissors. He comes out around 8x8cm in size.

The abbreviation are as follows:

Ch – chain/ sc – single crochet (which is dc in UK I just find it easier to work in US terms)/ hdc – half double crochet (half treble in UK)/ st/s – stitch/es/ Inc – 2 stitches in the same stitch/ Dec – reducing 2 stitches into one (use the invisible method if possible – this is a good tutorial / BLO crochet in the back loops only.

Body – starting with yellow

Round 1- ch13, working round both sides of the ch, start by sc 2 into the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next 10 ch, 4 sc into end ch, sc in next 10 ch, 2sc in the last ch (28), place stitch marker.

Round 2- Sc 4, inc, sc 4, inc, sc 8, inc, sc 4, inc, sc4 (32)

Round 3- Sc 4, inc, sc 4, inc, sc 12, inc, sc 4, inc, sc 4 (36)

Round 4- In BLO, sc around (36)

Round 5- Sc around (36), don’t fasten off, attach black, and drop the yellow behind.

Round 6- Sc around (36), don’t fasten off, drop the black and pick up the yellow.

Round 7-8- Sc around (36), drop the yellow, pick up the black.

Round 9- sc around (36), drop the black, pick up the yellow.

Round 10-11- Repeat round 7 and 8

Round 12- Repeat round 9

Round 13-14- Repeat round 7 and 8

Round 15- Repeat round 9, drop the black and pick up the yellow

Round 16- Sc around (36), add 10mm safety eyes between round 12 and 13 about 6 sts apart. Embroider the smile at this stage then stuff, and top up stuffing as you go.

Round 17- (sc 4, dec) x6 (30)

Round 18- (sc 3, dec) x6 (24)

Round 19- (sc 2, dec) x6 (18)

Round 20- (sc 1, dec) x6 (12)

Fasten off leaving a tail, and taking a tapestry needle, pass the tail from one side of the opening to the other in a zigzag along and pull together gently to close. Secure and sew in ends.

Antenna – make 2 in black

Ch2, and hdc 6 into the 2nd ch from the hook, slst to first hdc, ch 3, sc into 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next ch, slst to the part where the ch started. Fasten off with a tail to attach.

Sew in starting end and pass the tail you left through the bottom of the antenna (the opposite end to the circle) and attach to the head.

Wings – make 4

Ch 5, and working round both sides of the ch, sc into 2nd ch from the hook, hdc in the next ch, dc into the next ch, 2 sc in the last ch (this takes you to the other side), dc in the next ch, hdc in the next ch, and finish with a sc in the top ch back where you started, slst to close.

Fasten off, leaving a tail to attach, sew in starting end.

To fix the wings, overlap two slightly and use one tail to sew them together.

Fasten off and using the other tail sew onto the corners of the body (using pictures to reference).

And you are done!
